Dreadlock How-to
· Reading the dreadlock how-to
Please be sure to read the entire dreadlock how-to before beginning your dreadlocks.
Reading the entire dreadlock how-to will give you a better understanding
of the dreadlock process and will help out in the end.
· Pre-Washing
You will want to pre-wash your hair before attempting to put dreadlocks
in it. Your hair must be completely clean in order for the dreadlock process to
work well. Residue and build ups will slow down the locking process and
may cause your dreads to mildew. When prewashing your hair you will want
to use a residue free shampoo. Residue free
shampoo strips your hair of all residues and leaves none of its own
behind. Scents are residues!
· Applying an accelerator
Next you want to apply a dreadlock accelerator.
This step is not mandatory but it sure does make things a lot easier and
we sell a great dreadlock accelerator for just $2.95
here at Superhippie.com. You will not find a better deal on the internet. Believe me it’s worth it. If there is one thing
that you learn from this dreadlock how-to I hope it is that the dreadlock
accelerator is a great help in the beginning and for maintenance.
· Sectioning the hair
Let your hair dry and then, section it off where you want the dreadlocks
to be. Use rubber bands to secure the sections at the base. It is not
mandatory to section off your hair but it does make more even dreads. When you section off your hair, keep in mind that your
dreadlocks will grow fatter over time. dreadlocks pull and twist on themselves as they form and they will get shorter and fatter over the next few months.
· Back combing Grab
one section of hair near the tip in one hand. Grab a metal comb in the other. Start about one
inch from the base of your scalp and comb lightly but quickly backwards.
You will see your hair start to frizz (this is your dreadlock forming). Once your hair is totally frizzy
then you twist it (see next step for twisting). After twisting the hair
you back comb it some more, then twist again. Keep repeating this process
until you have a tight dread. The dreadlock
accelerator will help this process out more than you would believe.
It dries your hair and helps to keep it locked. You will thank yourself if you try it.
· Twisting
Twisting is not really twisting as the name implies but more like rubbing.
You hold the dreadlock between your right and left palm and rub them
together. This process helps the hair to lock and also keeps the
dreadlock tight.
· Waxing Many
people, and websites, will tell you to wax your dreads while you are
making them. DON’T DO IT! Wax
will let your hair slip and slow down the locking process. You shouldn’t
put wax on your dreads until a few weeks after they are locked. All wax
is for is to help the frizzies lay down and make your dreads look a
little better. When you do decide to wax them use only %100 natural beeswax. Other types of wax may
cause your dreadlocks to mold. Only wax clean dreads. This means only wax
them after washing them and use the wax sparingly. The websites that tell you to use wax while putting in your dreadlocks
are only concerned with making money and should not be trusted
· Maintenance There
are a few things that you should do to maintain your dreadlocks. First you should wash them
at least once, but not more than three times, a week. Second you should
twist your dreadlocks every now and then to keep them looking nice (the more the
better) especially after you wash them. Only wax clean dreadlocks if you
decide to wax them and never use shampoos with residues or your dreadlocks
will mold. Last but definitely not least Use the dreadlock accelerator!!! This is
pretty important a couple weeks into your dreadlocks. The accelerator
will tighten your dreads quick. You can use it forever and it will keep
them tight but it is not %100 necessary. You can use the accelerator on
dirty dreads but it works best right after you wash your dreadlocks. Let your dreads dry
and then apply the dreadlock accelerator. The dreadlock accelerator will make your dreadlocks
super happy. Finally, I hope this dreadlock how-to was super informative
